‘Watch what your kids are consuming:’ Experts talk kratom dangers

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Despite a statewide ban in October, an illegal substance continues to put lives in danger. Experts say kratom is still a popular supplement and kids are getting ahold of it.

“What we’re seeing now is people don’t know that they’re taking it,” said Justin Hayes with the Madison County Office of Alternative Sentencing and release.

Hayes said people often mistake kratom for an energy drink or substitute it for alcohol and end up becoming dependent. Before October 1, 2025, kratom was legal in Alabama and for years, it was sold without an age restriction…
