HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — While the next few days for many will be filled with the warmth of family and the glow of holiday traditions, the reality is much different for those without a place to call home.
At the Downtown Rescue Mission (DRM), staff and volunteers are working to ensure that the holidays remain a season of hope, rather than a reminder of hardship. Located on Evangel Drive, the mission’s doors remain open 24 hours a day, but during December, the goal shifts from providing simple shelter to creating a sense of home.
“It’s busy for everybody, and it’s hectic… everybody’s out buying gifts, and you hear the music,” said Keith Overholt, president and CEO of the Downtown Rescue Mission. “But folks that are homeless sometimes don’t see that same joy that happens.”…
