SOMERVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Minister Equator Black was greeted with a surprise party for his 100th birthday at The Hope Missionary Baptist Church.
It’s the sanctuary Black attended as a young boy. The church remains in his life after a fire destroyed his home and historical belongings.

After the fire, support poured in from community members. His neighbor and friend, Abel Mayo, said that the minister has meant so much to so many throughout the years.
“He’s like a 1926 Model T, and he’s still got a lot of life left in the tank,” Mayo said. “We’re just honored to know him and what a blessing he is and just the things that he has done in our lives.”…
