Huntsville’s annexations signal growth across the Tennessee Valley

LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. — The City of Huntsville annexed more than 3,000 acres this year across Madison, Limestone, Morgan and Marshall counties in the largest expansion in nearly two decades as the city positions itself for new businesses, jobs and residents.

The growth is reshaping not only Huntsville but also surrounding communities. Madison, now nearly surrounded by Huntsville’s boundaries, is being forced to pursue vertical rather than horizontal development. Meanwhile, Limestone County officials are planning for significant expansion as Huntsville extends farther west.

Of the annexed land, about 500 acres came from Limestone County alone—an area roughly equivalent to New York City’s Central Park. County officials say the expansion will bring unprecedented growth to the region…
