Animal rescue sees post-holiday surrender spike

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — In the weeks after Christmas, it’s not uncommon to return a few ill-fitting Christmas presents. Donna White with Madison Animal Rescue Foundation says that often, this includes unwanted animals given as Christmas gifts.

“If you adopt one during the holidays, just remember, it’s a lifetime commitment,” she said. “Don’t return it. It’s not Walmart.”

PETA reports that thousands of pets are abandoned each year after the holiday season. White said January through February, the Foundation gets around 10 calls a day from families asking to surrender an animal…
