Construction is expected to begin in late summer in Madison County on a second state veterans cemetery, pending final property acquisition, completion of a design and site preparation.
“We anticipate the first interment in the fall of 2027,” Jeff Newton, commissioner of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs, said last week in a phone interview.
ADVA has received authorization for federal grant funding of $13.5 million from the National Cemetery Administration within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to support the project’s development.
