Decatur, Florence among nation’s least expensive cities for renters, report shows

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — A new nationwide study on rent prices has revealed that two metro areas in northern Alabama offer some of the most affordable housing costs in the country, providing a sharp contrast to coastal markets where rents continue to strain household budgets.

According to research conducted by Construction Coverage using data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Decatur metro area ranks as the fifth most affordable small metro area in the United States, with a median rent of $1,090. This places Decatur well below the national median rent of $1,924, offering residents substantially lower housing costs than most American cities.

The Florence-Muscle Shoals metro area also appears in the bottom ten for small metros, ranking tenth with a median rent of $1,116
