Decatur street preacher arrested at shopping center alleges ‘persecution,’ sparking free speech debate

DECATUR, Ala. — The arrest of a street preacher outside a local Walmart on Sunday has sparked a firestorm of debate in the Decatur community, with many online questioning the constitutionality of the police department’s actions.

Decatur police arrested Bethany Stinnett, a street preacher, on charges of disorderly conduct following several noise complaints. According to responding officers, Stinnett was told she required a permit to speak on the public property surrounding the store.
