Alabama could soon control police staffing in 2 of the state’s largest cities

The cities of Huntsville and Montgomery would be required to have a minimum number of police officers or face possible state intervention under a bill approved Tuesday by an Alabama Senate committee.

The cities, two of the largest in the state, would have a five-year grace period to reach the minimum, which would be two full-time officers for every 1,000 residents as shown in the 2020 census.

Montgomery had a population of 200,603 in 2020, so the city would need about 400 officers to hit the minimum…
