‘Not allowed, but it’s happening’: Madison considers regulating short-term rentals

MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) — The City of Madison is considering joining the growing list of Alabama cities that allow short stays in rental properties.

Currently, the city does not allow short-term rentals (STRs), only regulating rentals that are at least 180 days. STRs are often used by tourists renting through sites like Airbnb and VRBO.

At a city council work session on Wednesday, city leaders raised concerns about STRs, mentioning noise and disruption in neighborhoods, security issues and out-of-state ownership.

“For me, safety needs to be number one when it comes to Airbnbs,” Council President Maura Wroblewski said. “Are we making sure they are ADA compliant? Are we making sure that the smoke detectors and CO2 detectors are working?”…
