Mayor Battle presents ceremonial check to Huntsville City School

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle presented Huntsville City Schools with a celebratory check on Thursday for over $5 million.

During the Huntsville City Council’s regular meeting, Battle presented a big ceremonial check for $5,552,689.85 to Superintendent Clarence Sutton after the school system made a presentation on its capital plan.

The mayor said the money comes from the city closing out three tax increment financing or TIF districts last year. A TIF district is a district made by the city that allows it to make improvements to infrastructure to promote economic development. Once that economic development happens, the city can then use the revenue from increased property tax values to pay for the original improvements and pay for other public works like schools.

In August 2025, Huntsville announced the closeout of TIF districts 2, 4 and 6. The city said all together these districts supported approximately $60 million in infrastructure improvements, including $23 million in school-related capital projects…
