Limited doctors, long drives for medical cannabis patients

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Medical cannabis will roll out by the end of April, but accessing it may be challenging.

Only nine doctors across the state are licensed to recommend the drug to patients, and two of those doctors are in North Alabama: Dr. Roy Barco in Muscle Shoals and Dr. Scott Williams in Huntsville.

Williams, a family medicine physician, said he is far too familiar with the shortcomings of traditional medications and would have recommended medical cannabis “yesterday” if he could have.

“This is an important progression in the delivery of healthcare in Alabama,” Williams said. “I think it’s needed, I think it’s necessary and I think it’s good.”…
