HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A local couple is urging residents to stay vigilant after fraudsters impersonating employees of Redstone Federal Credit Union (RFCU) stole $16,000 from their bank account which the couple had recently deposited from a 401(k).
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) says this type of scam is not new, with at least one person in the Tennessee Valley falling victim every day.
According to the couple, the scheme began when someone attempted to access their bank account using a fake ID. Days later, they received a follow-up call from what appeared to be a legitimate RFCU phone number. The caller, claiming to be from the credit union’s fraud department, said they needed access to the couple’s account to resolve the situation, at which point they ultimately withdrew the funds…
