High-Stakes at John Hunt Park: National Lineworker Rodeo Takes Over Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — If you’ve passed by John Hunt Park recently, you may have noticed an unusual skyline of wooden utility poles and humming bucket trucks. This week, the Rocket City is serving as the training ground and arena for the American Public Power Association (APPA) Public Power Lineworkers Rodeo, a premier national event that brings together the best utility crews from across the United States.

The competition, often described as the “Olympics” of the utility industry, isn’t just for show. It is a high-pressure environment where electric lineworkers demonstrate the exact skills they use to keep the lights on during midnight storms and natural disasters.

Precision Under Pressure

Spectators at the park watched as teams from various municipal utilities competed in timed events, including equipment change-outs and pole climbing. One of the most intense demonstrations is the “hurt-man” rescue, where workers must safely and rapidly lower a mannequin from the top of a pole—a simulation of what they would do if a colleague were injured on the job.
