Historic Lewter Hardware site reborn as mixed-use district in Downtown Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A corner of downtown Huntsville with a century of history officially began its next chapter Tuesday afternoon. City leaders and developers gathered at 223 Washington Street NE to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of the Lewter District, a mixed-use development built on the site of the former Lewter Hardware Company.

The 1.5-acre district is the result of a partnership between Emergent Properties and RNGD. The project features 14 luxury townhomes and a 75,000-square-foot, five-story Class A office building. While the development introduces modern architecture to the downtown skyline, project leaders emphasized that the goal was to honor the property’s deep roots in the community.

“This site has long been part of downtown Huntsville’s story,” said DJ Benedetto, Mid-South Sector Leader for RNGD. “Rather than start over, this team chose to build on that legacy, preserving history while creating something new and meaningful for the city.”…
