Huntsville City Council set to move on demolition of former apartment complex off University Drive

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Huntsville City Council has set a hearing for Thursday on a resolution to authorize the demolition of four deteriorating buildings that make up what remains of the Continental Apartments complex on Boxwood Drive NW, a property that has been deteriorating for years and that sits directly adjacent to occupied housing and local businesses.

The four addresses — 1302, 1304, 1306, and 1308 Boxwood Drive NW — appear as separate agenda items, each requiring its own public hearing and council resolution. The property sits just north of University Drive in northwest Huntsville and is sponsored by the city’s Community Development department.

A Building Inspector’s Damning Verdict

A structural evaluation conducted March 3 by an independent contractor left no room for interpretation. The inspector scored every component of the buildings at the maximum damage level across all three categories — exterior, interior, and utility systems — arriving at a grand total of 100 out of 100 points, the highest possible score indicating the worst possible condition.

In remarks attached to the evaluation, the inspector wrote: “Per my inspection on 3/3/26 of all buildings, my conclusion is that there is extensive damage and it would not be feasible to re-construct per Huntsville city codes.”
