‘Marine 1’ set to hit the water, expanding Decatur’s emergency response

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — On May 7, Decatur Fire & Rescue will officially launch its newest addition, Marine 1, a state-of-the-art rescue boat designed to enhance emergency response efforts.

According to Decatur Fire & Rescue officials, the vessel is named in honor of Daniella, the wife of Civil War General Joe Wheeler.

Marine 1 is equipped with the following:

  • Two Mercury Verado 350-horsepower outboard engines
  • 3,000-gallon-per-minute (GPM) fire pump
  • A 1,500 GPM deck gun
  • Dual 5-inch-diameter discharges with hoses
  • Sound Navigation And Ranging (SONAR) technology for searching the riverbed
  • A spotlight for night and fog operations
  • Thermal imaging
