For families relocating from Colorado Springs to north Alabama as part of U.S. Space Command’s move, the idea of leaving behind mountain vistas and an outdoor-centric lifestyle may raise concerns. But city leaders and planners in Huntsville say the Rocket City’s expanding greenway system offers a different, yet compelling, version of outdoor living — one built on connectivity, accessibility and growth.
With more than 70 miles of existing greenways and plans to expand to more than 300 miles in the coming years, Huntsville is quietly building a network designed not only for recreation, but for transportation, economic development and quality of life.
“We’re over a hundred miles when you count everything in progress, and we’ve got projects happening all across the city,” said Dennis Madsen, manager of urban and long-range planning for Huntsville. “The idea is that these greenways do double duty, transportation and recreation, and really, even triple duty when you consider how they connect people to destinations.”…
