Huntsville City Council set to honor ‘Microwave Dave’ with street, park renaming

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Huntsville City Council will vote Thursday on a pair of measures to permanently honor the legacy of beloved local blues musician Dave “Microwave Dave” Gallaher, who died in February.

On the agenda are two ordinances and a resolution. The first ordinance would rename a stretch of Cleveland Avenue NW between Church Street and Meridian Street as “Microwave Dave Way.” The second would rename the Downtown Dog Spot — the dog park located near I-565 and Pratt Avenue — as the “Microwave Dave Dog Spot.” A separate resolution honors his life and legacy in full.

Together, the measures represent one of the more sweeping civic tributes the council has undertaken for a local cultural figure.
