Safety upgrades were planned for site of deadly train crash, then canceled

GURLEY, Ala. — A railroad crossing where a father and child were killed when their vehicle collided with a train Wednesday night had been slated for safety upgrades that were canceled four years ago at the request of the Alabama Department of Transportation, FOX54 has found.

The collision happened around 6 p.m. near the crossing at Salty Bottom Road and U.S. Highway 72 East. A local man and one of his children died at the scene.

A second child was taken to a local hospital in critical condition…
