Madison County Sheriff’s Office warns of phone scam using fake DOJ documents

MADISON COUNTY, Ala. — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an ongoing telephone scam in which callers are falsely claiming to represent law enforcement agencies, federal courts and the U.S. Department of Justice.

Officials say victims are being contacted by phone and told they have outstanding warrants, missed court dates or unresolved legal matters that require immediate payment to avoid arrest. Scammers are then directing victims to send money through cryptocurrency kiosks, gift cards or other electronic payment methods.

Authorities also say the scammers are sending fraudulent documents that appear to be official federal paperwork. The fake materials include Department of Justice seals, fabricated arrest warrants, confidentiality agreements and bond instructions.
