FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— According to an annual report by the Violence Policy Center, Indiana and Illinois both rank in the top 10 states for Black homicide victims.
According to the 20th edition of the annual report, Black Homicide Victimization in the United States, Black Americans accounted for 52.2% of homicides in the United States despite only being 13.7% of the total population. That number is 6.4 times higher than the white homicide victimization rate and 3.5 times higher than the overall rate of the United States. This data was found by analyzing the most recent data from the CDC, which found that in 2024, 10,533 Black Americans were victims of homicide, eight out of 10 of them killed by a gun.
In addition to this, national data shows that Missouri has ranked first or second since 2006. In 2024, Missouri clocked 353 deaths, which leads to a Black homicide rate of 48.3 victims per 100,000 individuals. Illinois tied with Wisconsin for 3rd place with 708 deaths in 2024 and a Black homicide rate of 38.6 victims per 100,000 individuals.
