Packed Indy Church Erupts As 62 Rookie Firefighters Get Their Badges

Friday night at East 91st Street Christian Church, a full house of families, trainers and city leaders watched as Indianapolis Fire Department Chief Ernest V. Malone handed badges to 62 members of Recruit Class 91. Wayne Township Chief John Garino also stepped to the front to pin a badge on the newest member of the Wayne Township Fire Department, marking the recruits’ official move from academy to probationary status.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, Chief Ernest V. Malone presented badges to 62 members of Recruit Class 91, while Wayne Township Chief John Garino presented a badge to his department’s newest firefighter. The department’s post featured photos from the ceremony and described the night with the phrase “our family serving your family,” highlighting both the graduates and their supporters in the crowd.

From Oath To The Street

Per a January post by the department on Nextdoor, Recruit Class 91 took the oath on January 5 and completed an approximately 28-week academy.
