Indianapolis man sentenced to 50 years in prison after fatal July 2023 crash

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man has been sentenced in relation to a fatal crash on the near northeast side of Indianapolis in July 2023.

According to a news release from the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, Rodney Spells was sentenced to 50 years in prison after the early July fatal crash in the 3200 block of N. Keystone Ave. This comes after Spells was convicted of the following charges in October 2023:

  • One count of dealing in a narcotic drug, a Level 2 felony
  • One count of resisting law enforcement, a Level 3 felony
  • One count of leaving the scene of an accident, a Level 3 felony
  • One count of possession of a narcotic drug, a Level 3 felony
  • One count of causing death when operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Level 4 felony
  • One count of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, a Level 4 felony
  • One count of reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony
  • One count of possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony
  • One count of possession of a narcotic drug, a Level 6 felony
  • One misdemeanor count of resisting law enforcement
