‘Blood all over’: Prisoner charged with attempted murder after attack sent Pendleton corrections officer to hospital

MADISON COUNTY, Ind. – An inmate is charged with attempted murder after attacking a guard at Pendleton Correctional Facility in the fall.

According to court records, James Phillips, 45, also faces counts of battery and prisoner in possession of a deadly weapon.

The attack happened around 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 6. A correctional officer ended up being taken to an Indianapolis hospital after the assault.

According to court records, video showed Phillips attacking the guard, Jacobi Jessie, multiple times with what investigators previously described as a homemade weapon.

Jessie said he was working on the second floor of the cell block when Phillips came up the stairs and charged him. The two men scuffled, and Jessie said Phillips hit him multiple times with an “edged weapon.”

Jessie attempted to radio for help but couldn’t immediately reach anyone. Another corrections officer eventually arrived and restrained Phillips with a chokehold. Jessie then took Phillips’ weapon away from him.
