A man accused of killing his father in 2022 has been sentenced to 40 years in state prison, according to online court records.
Eric Futrell faced murder and voluntary manslaughter charges after police said home security footage captured him stabbing his 74-year-old dad multiple times at a home in Lawrence on April 30, 2022.
Futrell pleaded guilty earlier this month to his voluntary manslaughter charge. His murder charge was dismissed as part of a plea deal.
Lawrence police were called to the home shortly after 9:30 a.m. in the 12500 block of Teacup Way about a disturbance between family members. Police in a probable cause affidavit said Futrell was standing in the driveway with blood on his hands when they arrived. A large knife was found nearby, the affidavit stated.
His father, Bobbie Hill, was on the ground with multiple stab wounds. He died shortly after arriving at a hospital.
Investigators said home security camera footage showed Futrell ringing the family’s front doorbell shortly before the 911 call. The clip shows Hill open the door and “immediately” being stabbed by Futrell, the affidavit said.
