ISP encourages passengers to promote safe driving habits

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Sunday marked the end of National Passenger Safety Week.

This national campaign’s goal is to promote safe driving habits and practices while also preventing unsafe ones by encouraging passengers to speak up. In 2023, The National Highway Traffic Safety Association added this campaign to their national calendar to make it an ongoing event the last week of January of every year.

Indiana State Police believe that is this a very important issue that a lot of people usually don’t talk about when it comes to vehicle accidents.

Sgt. Matt Ames is a Public Information Officer for ISP, and he says one easy way to help out the driver is to take their phones away.

“We encourage drivers that when you get in your vehicle to turn your cellphone off or give it to a passenger in the vehicle,” he said. “If you do get a text or phone call, we encourage you to do hands free when you are talking on the cellphone and not to text at all while driving.”
