INDIANAPOLIS (WXIN) — An Indiana lawmaker has brought forward a piece of legislation to the Indiana General Assembly surrounding the Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ sale of personal information.
According to House Bill 1100 , a piece of legislation brought forward by State Rep. Gregory Porter, D-District 96 earlier this month, the bill would prohibit the Indiana BMV from selling the personal information of certain individuals.

This comes after Nexstar’s WXIN conducted multiple reports regarding the BMV’s sale of personal data. According to previous reports , it was estimated that the agency made $25.6 million from the sales in 2023, which pays for various costs at the branches, including:
- Salaries
- Lease payments
- Security
- Utility charges
- Purchase of new technologies.
The bill, if passed, would prohibit the BMV from selling the personal information of the following individuals in the state of Indiana, including those who:
- Are less than 21 years of age
- Are 65 years of age or older
- Opts out of the sale of the personal information.
