18-year-old sentenced to 45 years for 2022 murder

INDIANAPOLIS — An 18-year-old was sentenced to 45 years for shooting and killing a man on Indy’s east side two years ago.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday afternoon that Tiyuan Johnson has received a prison sentence of 45 years in connection to the shooting death of 27-year-old Kevan Akbar on Oct. 29, 2022.

IMPD arrests 18-year-old accused of October murder

Johnson pleaded guilty to murder and possession of a machine gun last week in Marion Superior Court 28, with both of those charges being level 5 felonies.

According to previous reports , officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to an area near a gas station in the 6000 block of N. Arlington Ave. and E. 30th St. in response to a person who was shot. Officers arrived and found Akbar inside a vehicle with gunshot wounds to the head.

He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition where he later died.

As part of their investigation, detectives acquired security footage from the gas station which led them to identify Johnson as a suspect.
