INDIANAPOLIS — Court documents reveal that a 3-year-old boy might lose most of his lower leg after his mother kept him in a home without heat until his foot turned black with frostbite.
Amber Griffith, 28, has been arrested and charged with one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 3 felony.
According to court documents, police began investigating the case after Griffith’s son was brought to a hospital on Jan. 19 due to his foot turning black from frostbite.
Police said the child underwent surgery that same day to remove the damaged tissue on his foot with the worst-case scenario being the child having his leg amputated below his knee.

Police ended up speaking to Griffith and found out she lived at a home E. Gimber Street with two relatives. The home had no heat and no running water due to the pipes being frozen, police said.
Court documents reveal that despite Griffith claiming her son’s foot was “slightly discolored” for weeks before the hospital visit, the child was only taken to the hospital once Griffith noticed her own foot was beginning to hurt.
