Flights from Purdue to begin, Trustees face protest

Purdue airport

Starting March 15, fliers will be able to book flights at the Purdue airport to Chicago starting using the flight code “LAF.”

President Mung Chiang announced the change at Friday’s board of trustees meeting.

Mung addressed the recent news that researchers may have identified Amelia Earhart’s plane at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean in the past several days.

“She flew out of America’s first university airport here at Purdue since 1930,” Chiang said. “From 1935 to 1937, until the fateful flight, she was an instructor, counselor and advisor, especially to women students.”

The new terminal at the airport will be named after Earhart. After the meeting, Chiang said the airport will run four round-trip flights to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport a day.

Climate action protest

Half a dozen members of the Purdue Climate Action Collective sat in the back of the room holding signs pointing to Purdue’s lack of a climate action plan.

“Our specific goal is to have Purdue commit to a climate action plan by a given date,” Simon Fields said. “IU has committed to be carbon neutral by, I believe, 2040.”
