INDIANAPOLIS — A former southern Indiana sheriff and political powerhouse in the state republican party now faces even more charges in an Indiana State Police corruption probe.
Jamey Noel — formerly the sheriff of Clark County — and his wife Misty are due in court Monday afternoon to each face 10 counts of theft and tax evasion.
Those charges are on top of the 15 counts Noel already faces for theft, corruption, ghost employment, official misconduct and obstruction of justice.
State police’s investigators allege Noel utilized county employees to work on his private property and offered to sell those employees public vehicles at reduced prices.
He’s suspected of running up $5 million in personal expenses on a credit card that belonged to one of a handful of southern Indiana fire and EMS departments that he controlled.
It’s estimated he purchased and possessed more than 100 vehicles, including public safety vehicles, a 1930 Ford Roadster, pick-up trucks, luxury cars and two classic 1970s Plymouth Road Runners, one of which was adorned with a Noel campaign sticker on the back window.
