Man arrested after allegedly shooting a juvenile in Shelbyville

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. — A Shelbyville man has been arrested after police said he shot a juvenile.

According to a press release, the Shelbyville Police Department SWAT Team — with assistance from detectives — took 23-year-old Alexander Russell into custody on Friday, Feb. 9. Russell was found in his residence after a search warrant was executed on his home.

Russell was booked into Shelby County Jail after he was arrested. He has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery when the assault poses a substantial risk of death and battery by means of a deadly weapon.

SPD officials have reported that the juvenile Russell allegedly shot was 16 years old. An affidavit for probable cause indicates the juvenile was shot in the chest multiple times around 3 a.m. on Dec. 29, 2023.

After the shooting, the victim went back to their house, where they alerted a relative of their injuries. The juvenile’s relative then called 911, and medics eventually transported the victim to IU Methodist Hospital.
