IMPD catches car thief in the act as Kia & Hyundai break-ins remain frequent

INDIANAPOLIS — According to metro police, one officer’s quick actions helped track down a stolen car Thursday, and catch a suspect linked to another crime.

IMPD said Officer John Gomez was out patrolling the area – known to be a recent hot spot for Kia thefts – when sure enough, a stolen Kia was clocked at that intersection.

“Our officers are out there,” said Public Information Officer William Young. “There’s lots of times our officers are out there deterring crimes that you don’t hear about.”

According to court documents, he caught up with the car – startling a man in the driver’s seat. Police said that man, 47-year-old Ian Kindred, was caught with pliers in hand and bags of meth in his pockets. He was arrested after trying to run from officers.

“Once on the ground, Kindred was not obeying officers commands to stop resisting as he placed his hands underneath his stomach refusing to being handcuffed,” reads the probable cause affidavit. “During the struggle, Officer Gomez broke a fingernail, while Kindred was actively resisting arrest, officers then had to use weight leverage and knee strikes to gain control of his movement.”
