Indy’s last United Art and Education store closes

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis lost another United Art and Education store.

The Castleton location closed on Saturday. The store posted a thank-you note on social media Sunday morning.

“Indianapolis area teachers, parents, artists and friends – thank you for 30 years of love and loyalty! This location is now permanently closed,” the post said.

The company indicated that “rising costs” contributed to the closure of the store, which had been located at 5671 East 86th St.

“It is with sadness that we announce the closure of our retail store in Castleton. With rising costs, we are unable to continue renting the space we currently occupy, and cannot find a suitable location nearby,” the company said on its website . “We have appreciated your business in the Castleton area for nearly 30 years.”

A south side location at U.S. 31 and Stop 11 Road shuttered in mid-March. At the time, the company indicated that “circumstances beyond our control” led to the closure.

United Art and Education is based in Fort Wayne. It was founded in 1960 and has retail stores in Mishawaka and Fort Wayne. Two other retail locations remain open in Ohio: Dayton and Hilliard, a Columbus suburb.
