INDIANAPOLIS — A former correctional officer who worked at the Indiana Women’s Prison has been found guilty of raping inmates.
On Wednesday, Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced that former prison guard Gbenga Afolabi was found guilty by a jury of two counts of rape, a Level 3 felony, in addition to two counts of attempted rape, five counts of sexual misconduct, three counts of official misconduct and two counts of intimidation.

Court documents state that Afolabi was a correctional officer at the Indiana Women’s Prison when — in July 2021 — officials were alerted of inappropriate sexual relations between Afolabi and inmates under his supervision.
During the investigation, four victims came forward and revealed that Afolabi used his position of authority to threaten them if they didn’t comply with his sexual advances.
“The defendant preyed on the vulnerable and took advantage of his position of power to abuse those who were there to rehabilitate themselves, not be victimized,” said Mears. “The defendant will now face the consequences for his colossal violation of trust.”
