Family member says man shot by Indianapolis officer has schizophrenia

A man who an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officer shot last month was having a mental health episode, according to his family.

Julius Hill, 25, was arrested and charged by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office on Nov. 8 with kidnapping while hijacking a vehicle, armed robbery and pointing a firearm at another after an alleged carjacking two weeks prior.

Hill was shot by 15-year veteran officer Joseph Beasley and taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police would not confirm if Hill is still in the hospital, but jail records reveal he hasn’t been officially booked on the charges.

The carjacking

On Oct. 27, at about 3:30 p.m. a woman was driving her black 2013 Chevy Equinox from her home to Brookside Park to let her dog outside to play. She was traveling north on Kealing Avenue when she saw two Indianapolis Metropolitan Police vehicles at the intersection of 11th Street and Kealing Avenue .

As she continued about a block north from the intersection, according to court documents, Hill came into the street, tapped on her car, pulled on her driver’s door handle and told her to let him in. She ignored him and tried to get away, but her left rear window was down and Hill pulled himself into her vehicle through the window.
