WATCH: IMPD officer praised for helping save life of unresponsive newborn

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis metro police officer is being praised for her efforts to save the life of an unresponsive baby minutes after it had just been born.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department , Officer Kelly Chappell was called on Oct. 1 to a residence in IMPD’s East District to assist with a newborn that was reported to not be breathing.

The bodycam footage showed a woman who reportedly told Chappell that she did not know she was pregnant and had just given birth to a baby girl. Chappell learned the baby had been born just minutes before she arrived on the scene.

Chappell can be seen in the footage holding the baby as it was struggling to breathe and immediately began rendering chest compressions.

Chappell continued providing these chest compressions until firefighters with the Indianapolis Fire Department arrived and continued clearing the baby’s airway.

Indianapolis EMS then transported the newborn baby to Riley Children’s Hospital, with Chappell following close behind.
