Weather service updates snow, ice forecast as winter storm arrives in the Tri-State

The National Weather Service updated its forecast for Sunday’s winter storm this morning. Here’s what forecasters are saying about how the day will play out.

In the Evansville area, Southwestern Indiana and northern parts of Southern Illinois

Predominant precipitation type: Heavy sleet and snow, with periods of freezing rain.

Total sleet and snow accumulations: 2 to 5 inches. Snow will be heavy and wet.

Travel impacts: Major travel impacts expected.

Western Kentucky area, including Henderson and Owensboro

Predominant precipitation type: Freezing rain and sleet mixed with snow.

Total ice and snow accumulations: 1 to 3 inches of sleet and snow, and 0.25 to 0.5 inches of ice accumulations, with local totals reaching as high as 0.75 inches.

Travel impacts: Major travel impacts expected.

When will the winter storm end?

For most towns in the Evansville area, the last of the precipitation should leave the region between 8 a.m. and noon on Monday.

The last few hours of the winter storm will be an all-snow event.
