Indianapolis Zoo reveals name of baby male orangutan

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — On Wednesday, The Indianapolis Zoo announced the winning name for the male baby orangutan born in the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center on Feb. 20, 2025. Following a naming contest that accrued 9,000 votes, the winning name for the baby was Edi, which means “handsome one.”

According to a release from the Indianapolis Zoo, 9,000 votes were cast; Edi captured 50% of the vote, followed by Ketambe with 38% and Lada with 12%.

Edi is the second orangutan birth at the Indianapolis Zoo since the opening of the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center in 2014. His birth results from close collaboration with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Orangutan Species Survival Plan, a program ensuring a sustainable, genetically diverse and demographically varied AZA population…
