You know how sometimes you stumble across something random online and it sends you down a rabbit hole? That happened to me recently when I found an old illustrated map of Indiana from the 1940s. It was full of quirky landmarks and attractions people thought were a big deal nearly 80 years ago. One spot really stood out to me – the spot labeled as the highest point in Indiana.
Naturally, I had to find out if that highest point from the 1940s is still the highest point today – and sure enough, it is!
Hoosier Hill is located just east of the tiny town of Lynn in Randolph County, and it holds the title of Indiana’s highest elevation, standing tall (well, tall-ish) at 1,257 feet above sea level. It’s been officially recognized as Indiana’s high point since 1936, but the old map didn’t give it a name, just a general location. Today, it’s got a marker and even a little wooded trail to guide your way.
I think every Hoosier should add “climb Hoosier Hill” to their bucket list, and the good news is you won’t need hiking boots or an oxygen tank to get it done. One visitor described it like this:
