Juneteenth foodways festival celebrates African American culinary heritage

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Juneteenth Foodways Festival, celebrating African-American culinary heritage, will be held on June 13th at the President Harrison House in Indianapolis.

This annual event honors Chef Dolly Johnson, who served as a chef for President Benjamin Harrison and later for four other U.S. presidents. The festival will feature 30 Central Indiana black chefs and caterers, showcasing dishes inspired by Johnson’s legacy.

“This is our fourth year at the Foodways Festival,” said Phillip Guy, a participant known for his unique sauces. “We normally do food and sauces, but this year we’re going to do sauces. It’s barbecue season, so everybody wants sauces, so we got it for them.” Jonathan Warren, representing the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, explained, “The Food Festival honors Chef Dolly Johnson, who was the chef for President Harrison. She brought a unique kind of culture, African-American culture, into the White House.”…
