Indianapolis under smog alert covering a third of state

Air quality concerns in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has declared an air quality alert from midnight Wednesday through midnight Thursday night for a third of the state’s counties. The alert includes Indianapolis.

This alert, unlike others issued earlier this month, was not cited as being connected to smoke from Canadian wildfires. Ground-level ozone, also known as smog, forms during warm temperatures when certain pollutants react in the presence of heat and sunlight. On Wednesday afternoon, the Storm Track 8 seven-day forecast called for a high temperature of 86 on Thursday.
