Only Two Indiana Restaurants Have Earned a James Beard Award

The James Beard Awards are among the most prestigious honors in the culinary world. Presented annually by the James Beard Foundation, the awards recognize excellence in the restaurant, hospitality, and food media industries. Yet, despite Indiana’s rich food culture, only two restaurants in the state have received this coveted recognition.

What Is the James Beard Foundation?

Established in the 1980s, the James Beard Foundation honors the legacy of chef and television personality James Beard, widely considered a pioneer of modern American cooking and food broadcasting. The foundation promotes excellence by supporting chefs, restaurants, and culinary leaders across the U.S., with a focus on independent establishments.

Each year, the organization awards top talent in categories ranging from Best Chef to Outstanding Bar, Restaurant Design, and more. These honors are viewed as the culinary equivalent of the Oscars.

A family-run restaurant since the 1960s, Wagner’s is celebrated for its family-style fried chicken dinners and small-town charm. Its reputation for consistency, warmth, and tradition earned it national recognition from the foundation.

St. Elmo Steak House – Honored in 2012

One of Indiana’s most iconic dining institutions, St. Elmo Steak House in Indianapolis, received the same award back in 2012. Established in 1902, the restaurant is known for its classic steakhouse fare and its famous shrimp cocktail, which features a fiery horseradish sauce that has become its signature. St. Elmo remains a landmark destination for both locals and visitors.
