Two new laws going into effect July 1 impact drivers and smokers

Indianians are bracing for two significant rule changes set to take effect on July 1.

Drivers in Central Indiana will have to abide by new speed limits through most of Interstate 465, a rule that was greenlit by state lawmakers earlier this year. The speeding law for the I-465 increases the speed limit to 65 mph from 55 mph.

Simultaneously, Indiana’s cigarette tax is poised to triple on July 1, skyrocketing from roughly $1 to $3 per pack, impacting thousands of smokers across the state. The measure is part of an effort to plug a $2 billion budget hole, despite loud protests from hundreds of Indiana businesses, as reported by local news source IndyStar.
