INDIANAPOLIS — Construction of the new Henry Street Bridge is revealing more than infrastructure.
As beams for the new bridge begin to take shape, archaeologists remain on-site documenting discoveries beneath the surface. The bridge is being built over what was once Greenlawn Cemetery, one of the city’s earliest burial grounds.
So far, crews have identified more than 1,100 grave shafts. Many of the remains appear to date back to the 19th century. Items recovered include casket hardware, grave markers and personal effects such as jewelry, helping researchers determine the age of the remains…
