Cynthiana, Ind. – A light earthquake rattled parts of southwestern Indiana, southeastern Illinois, and northwestern Kentucky late Friday night, prompting several residents to report brief shaking. The U.S. Geological Survey says the 2.6 magnitude quake struck at 10:06 p.m. CDT about 1 kilometer east of Cynthiana, Indiana, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
According to the USGS, at least 15 people submitted reports of feeling the tremor, with most describing a quick jolt or mild vibration. No damage or injuries have been reported. Shaking was noted in nearby communities including Evansville, Mount Vernon, and parts of Henderson, Kentucky, as well as Carmi, Illinois.
Earthquakes of this size are not uncommon in the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone, which runs along the Illinois-Indiana border.
