According to an IndyStar article, “Indy homelessness keeps rising in 2025 — but not for veterans. 4 takeaways from new data,” the homeless population in Indianapolis hovered around 1,800 people in the first half of 2025.

The correct reaction to this is horror and sadness. It is unacceptable and horrible that 1,800 people do not have a permanent place to leave their belongings, to feel safe and secure.

The correct response to the policy problem of homelessness is to meet it with adequate policy solutions. Mayor Joe Hogsett’s budget does not do that…
