Indianapolis residents to rally to address future of vacant state prison

East side neighborhood eyes future of abandoned state prison

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Residents of the near-east side of Indianapolis will gather Saturday to rally for an effort to address the future of a former state prison that has sat empty since 2017.

The day will begin with an effort from Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, an environmental and community nonprofit that partners with volunteers to improve public spaces in Indianapolis. From 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, volunteers will clean up the Willard Park neighborhood around the state’s former women’s prison, 401 N Randolph St. Volunteers can sign up online.

From noon-3 p.m. Saturday, the Near East Side Community Organization Inc. and the nonprofit Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership will host Vision for the Prison at the former prison. The event aims to engage the community in reimagining the vacant property…
