New trash carts start rolling out Monday

Christmas is coming early for many Indy residents.

Driving the news: Starting Monday, crews are dropping off new trash carts to more than half of the city in preparation for a change in solid waste collection provider next year.

  • There’s no charge for the new carts.

The big picture: The city is divided into 11 solid waste districts.

  • The Department of Public Works manages four.
  • Republic Waste Services of Indiana services six, and Waste Management of Indianapolis Hauling manages one.

The latest: The seven districts not managed by DPW will be serviced by a new provider, Lakeshore Recycling Systems, next year.

  • Lakeshore is providing new 96-gallon trash carts to all customers in the solid waste districts it will service, starting with 1 and 6 first, followed by 2, 3, 4, 9 and 10.

Zoom in: If you have a blue or green trash cart, you’ll be getting a new, gray trash cart sometime in the next few weeks.

  • The new carts will include a hangar tag with instructions from Lakeshore.
  • Residents should start using the new cart immediately and leave their old cart empty and on the curb on their regular service day to be picked up in the following weeks.

Between the lines: If you already have a gray cart, you’re in one of the districts serviced by DPW and nothing is changing for you…
